Do You Actually Need a Website, or Is Google Business Profile Enough?

Oliver Havis
Web Developer

I build websites for a living, so you'd expect me to say everyone needs one. I won't.

Some small businesses are better off putting their energy into a free Google Business Profile and skipping the website for now. Here's the honest version.

Someone searching for a local business on a phone
For a lot of local searches, the map listing is the first thing people see — sometimes the only thing.

When a Google Business Profile is genuinely enough

A well-run Google Business Profile gives you a map listing, reviews, photos, opening hours, and a tap-to-call button — for free. That can be plenty if:

  • You're a local trade or service people find by searching "near me" (a window cleaner, a mobile hairdresser).
  • You win work mostly by word of mouth and reviews, not by people researching you online.
  • You're just testing an idea and don't want to spend yet.

If that's you, set up the profile properly, gather reviews, and come back to a website when you've outgrown it.

When you genuinely need a website

A website earns its keep when:

  • People compare you before buying — they want to see your work, prices, and what makes you different.
  • You need to control the story — a profile is a few photos and a phone number; a site is where you actually sell.
  • You take bookings or enquiries at volume, and need a proper contact flow.
  • You're running on spreadsheets and the "website" you really need is closer to a system — that's a different conversation (the difference between a website and a system).

The honest middle ground

For a lot of Lincolnshire small businesses, the right first step isn't a big site — it's a fast one-page website plus a Google Business Profile. The profile gets you found; the page closes the deal.

You can always grow it later, and you avoid paying for pages you don't need. That's the whole anti-over-engineering idea.

How to decide in two minutes

  1. Do people find you by searching, and do you just need a call? → A profile may be enough for now.
  2. Do people weigh you up before buying? → You need a website.
  3. Are you managing the actual work in spreadsheets and email? → You need a system, not just a site.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes — and every local business should have one regardless of whether they also have a website. It costs nothing and often drives the first call.

Can a Google Business Profile rank without a website?

Yes, especially for "near me" searches, where the map pack does a lot of the work. A website strengthens the profile and gives people somewhere to land, but it isn't a hard requirement to appear on the map.

What's the cheapest real website?

A fast one-page site is usually the cheapest genuinely useful option. There's a full breakdown in how much a small business website costs in the UK.

Will you tell me if I don't actually need one?

Yes. I'd rather you spent the money where it works. If a profile and a single page will do the job, that's what I'll recommend.

Not sure which you need?
